BOXING NEWS - Two young women boxers from the Eden District have bagged gold medals at the recent SA Championships in Kuils River, Cape Town.
Asemahle Malobola (George Boxing Club) beat Luyanda Cele from KwaZulu-Natal in the under 63,66kg category while Anathi Mbalo (Knysna Boxing Club) defeated Eastern Cape's Siphesihle Tandabanco in the under 67,70kg category.
Regional chair Nkosikho Makalima said they are very proud of the two girls, not only as a region, but as the whole province.
He said that it was a team effort and thanked everyone who played a part in getting the girls to this level, including the Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport (DCAS) for their support.
"To the parents of the boxers, well done and thanks a lot for letting your children work with us, especially since they are girls. It shows that you respect the trainers and management and you allowed us to act as parents to your children," he said.
They had hoped for more medals as they took five provincial gold medallists to the nationals, but due to medical problems and weight problems not all of them were cleared to compete by the championship doctors.
