BODYBUILDING NEWS - Local paraplegic bodybuilder Shaun Butler (32) is living proof that physical challenges shouldn't stand in your way of becoming a champion.
Butler, who lives in George, won the disability section at the Physical Culture Association (PCA's) Battle of the Titans held at the Durbanville auditorium in Cape Town on Saturday 22 July.
Following this incredible result, he has been selected to take part in the PCA South African Championships in Pretoria on 23 September.
Based on his performance at this major event, he could be jetting off to Spain for the PCA World Championships later this year.
Butler has been a wheelchair user for the past nine years after he lost the use of his legs due to spinal cord injury (T3) in a motorcycle accident. He started bodybuilding about 18 months ago and never looked back.
"I've participated quite a bit in Crossfit and am also involved in the Disabled Road Race Foundation that organises the annual OCC here in George," he says. "My trainer, Johan du Toit at Intensity Fitness and Training, is very positive and has really helped me a lot in the last few months."
Butler says he has been working hard and giving his all during training.
He would love to compete at the SAs and in Spain and is asking for sponsorships to help reach his dream. "Although I put everything I have into training and the gym, sponsorships will definitely make the journey a lot easier.
"If anyone is willing to assist me in reaching my dream, I would greatly appreciate it," he says.
