GEORGE NEWS - The much-anticipated annual derby between York High and Oudtshoorn High School (Struisies) featured intense competition in rugby, netball, hockey and chess, showcasing the talents and determination of both schools over the weekend.
The derby kicked off on Friday 16 August and the Yorkies' hockey skills did not disappoint.
The u.14A girls team set the tone with a 9-0 victory, followed by the u.16A girls and boys teams who also won their matches.
The u.19B girls and first boys teams continued the trend by claiming victory over Struisies before the first girls team capped it off with a remarkable 15-0 victory.
Netball matches were fiercely contested. The u.14A team edged out a close 20-17 win, and the u.15A team followed suit. The u.16A team also claimed victory, while the first team delivered a strong performance, securing a 28-15 win.
On the rugby field, Struisies however cleaned up.
Despite the fierce competition, York's u.19B team managed to secure a 22-17 win, offering a highlight in an otherwise tough series of matches. The u.14A, u.15A, and u.16A teams were all defeated.
The first team fought valiantly, but ultimately the Struisies were the stronger team on the day and celebrated a 19-13 victory.
In chess, York High School outplayed their opponents, winning most of the matches.
York's director of sport, Jason Slater, said the weekend was filled with exciting matches played in great spirit. "Both schools can be incredibly proud of their learners' performance on the field and their exemplary behaviour off it.
"A heartfelt thank you goes out to everyone who contributed to making this weekend such a memorable event. We eagerly look forward to welcoming Oudtshoorn High School back in 2025."
