GEORGE NEWS - A tough course set up with slick greens and thick, demanding rough, saw high scores for the weekend, but this seemed to barely trouble the overall winners of each division. Norgarb (142 off a + 2 handicap) walked away with top honours in the A Division of handicaps +4 to 8 after an evenly contested final round against Stafie Barnard (in second place with a 143 off a +2 handicap) and Corné Bernhardt (third place with 147 off a scratch handicap).
Norgarb and Barnard had ended Day One with magnificent scores of 68 gross and 69 gross respectively and the gallery at the clubhouse afforded the players with plenty of support as they completed their first 18 holes of the tournament.
Day two was a tougher prospect though, with each player handing in cards of 74 gross for the final round.
"It is a privilege to win the George Golf Club Champs and even more of a privilege to be able to battle it out with a true champion like Stafie Barnard. Thanks also to all the members who followed us on the course this year," says Norgarb.
Club Captain and defending B Division champion from 2010, Kobus Landman, had a mixed bag of scores, ending the division (handicaps 9 - 18) again in first place with an overall gross of 158.
This after rounds of 82 gross (36 shots on the front nine and 46 on the back) and a magnificent final round of 76 gross, playing from a 9 handicap.
Derek Botes placed second in the division behind Landman on an overall gross score of 170 after beating Graeme Johnstone and Rick Mackimmie into 3rd and 4th place respectively on a count out.
A championship of this nature would not be complete without the support from the sponsors, Glenrand MIB, who have been at the helm of the club’s signature members events for over 30 years.
John Mundell and Christo Kritzinger provided a magnificent prize table.
