He carded a brilliant 65 gross off a 2 handicap during the first round on wet and heavy course conditions after 3 days of gentle rain. Stafie Barnard (1 handicap; 146 gross) carded a 74 gross and Ian Botha (2 handicap; 150 gross) a 73 gross on day two of the championships but Mitchell's gross 75 on the same day was still enough to seal overall victory with 6 shots over Barnard.
During his victory speech Mitchell made mention of the talent of one of his playing partners during the final round, 14 year old scratch golfer Jovan Rebula, who impressed with scores of 72 and 78 to end in tied 4th position overall on 150.
The B division was a much tighter affair. Both Chris Mackay (12 handicap) and Robin Gray (11 handicap) shot gross 81's during round one.
It was old campaigner and current defending division champ Kobus Landman (10 handicap; 166 gross) whose second round gross 80, together with a gross 86 from round one, was enough to earn a hard fought one point victory over Keith Plateel (11 handicap; 167 gross).
Round one on Saturday also saw Kobus Wolmarans (B division, 12 handicap) shoot his first ever hole in one on the 15th hole and he was presented with his certificate of achievement at prize giving. He was also given the opportunity to ring the bell in the bar, which was gratefully received by all attending.
Thanks went to the event sponsor John Mundell from AON for the magnificent Vitria glassware prizes, the green keeping staff for preparing the course in tough conditions, the council, management and staff of the George Golf Club and the 121 players in the field who completed two days of tough strokeplay.
