The tournament is one of the country’s biggest under 11 and under 15 events with names like Ajax, Santos, Old Mutual Academy, Cape United and Vasco among the 40 participating teams.
The teams visited the Green Point Stadium and Table Mountain before the under 15s kicked off against Vasco.
Both the George teams played exceptionally well and proved that George United’s football can compete with the best in the country.
The under 15s staged some excellent football against some of the country’s best youngsters and therefore will be playing the tournament again for the next two years.
The under 11 team managed to get into the quarter finals before finally being knocked out after going through a very tight group.
Staff and parents of the GUFC provided welcome support. They stayed at the Western Cape Sports School.
It was a trip of a life-time and although the teams did not bring back the medals, they showed that with proper coaching and a well-organised structure the youth of George, if given the opportunity and proper facilities, can compete with any in the country.
