GEORGE FOOTBALL NEWS - The struggling side Silver Stars FC are facing tough challenges in the Geolfa League after losing 11 games and playing three draws out of 14 games played. The Silver Town team are currently sitting at number sixteen and need to win all their remaining matches to avoid the relegation axe. Looking at their remaining fixtures it seems that the Silver Town lads have a steep mountain to climb.
Simunye FC, already at the top of the table, beat Silver Stars with a whopping 10-0 in a George Local Football Association League (Geolfa) game on Sunday afternoon, 28 April, at Lawaaikamp Stadium.
The home side, Simunye, dominated the game from the start, with Bongani Phendukwana and Sesethu Jack staying on the attack in the centre of the field and the back line contributing smart play with positive build-ups. The first opportunity fell to Siyabonga "Mpumlo" Miggels when Fanele "Mido" Chele played in a beautiful cross, but Mpumlo's shot went over the crossbar. Silver Stars goalkeeper saved a powerful long-range shot from the right side of the field, forcing a corner for Simunye, which came to nothing.
Silver Stars attacked with a shot at the goal by Xolani Mabele, which went over the crossbar, and Simunye's Miggels retaliated with the first goal to make it 1-0. Referee Lwazi Mrhuquli gave a penalty after Silver Stars' goalkeeper committed a foul inside the box and Noel Bacela scored to make it 2-0. Simunye was controlling the game with Gift Magani and Lonwabo Stuurman on the right side creating chances for Miggels.
The goals followed quickly for Simunye, with Siyabonga, Fanele Chele and Noel Bacela scoring in succession. Silver Stars almost got their foot in the door when they received a free kick, but they failed to convert and in return Siyabonga scored goal number seven, the last goal in the first half.
Silver Stars' goalkeeper made a beautiful save shortly after the start of the second half, but had no success when Gift Magani broke from the centre of the field to score Simunye's eighth goal. After their ninth goal, Stuurman had a beautiful opportunity from a cross played in from the left side of the field, but his strong head shot went wide. Chele put the cherry on the cake with a powerful goal from just outside the box to make the end score 10-0 for Simunye.
After the game, Simunye head coach Luthando Nogqala said they didn't expect any difficulties in winning the game as Silver Stars is one of the weakest teams on the log. "We are sending a strong message for every team in the league," he said. "It's the right time for our team; we are in the business."
