FOOTBALL NEWS - The Lawaaikamp side Simunye FC beat Benfica from Mossel Bay 3-2 in a Hollywoodbets Regional League game on Saturday afternoon, 11 November at the Lawaaikamp Stadium.
Shane Booysen, Shane-Lee Windvogel and Yamkela Ntlaba scored for Simunye while Liyema Ntamo and Simbongile Mthontiso netted their goals for Benfica.
Simunye kicked off the first half playing the ball on the ground. The central midfielder of Simunye, Shane Booysen, scored the opening goal after an excellent cross played in from the left side of the field.
The Mossel Bay side used their strength on the ball to keep on pressing for their first goal. Benfica winger Liyema Ntamo scored their equalising goal with a powerful strike inside the box.
Assisted by Athenkosi Mahala to break through the back line of Benfica, Shane-Lee Windvogel scored another goal for Simunye.Aviwe Ntwanambi of Benfica missed an opportunity when he was faced with Simunye goalkeeper Mos Nkosikhona and shot straight into the side netting.
Lukhanyo Bunu of Benfica delivered another powerful strike trying his luck, but the ball hit the goalpost. The exciting first half ended 2-1 with Simunye leading.
The second half saw Benfica creating more chances. They received a free kick, but a Simunye defender cleared the ball away.
Under pressure to score, the Benfica team kept pushing, but Yamkela Ntlaba scored the third foal for Simunye after great work from the centre of the field. Simbongile Mthontiso scored for Benfica from a penalty kick, making it 3-2. The winning team Simunye collected maximum points.
Youngster dreams big
The game saw Benfica player Avela Mpolweni debuting in the Regional League. The talented 17-year-old left wing back, a learner at Indwe High School in Mossel Bay, said it was a great feeling to be playing his first game in this league.
He wants to become a successful athlete, not just a successful player, but he also wants to be a role model and influencer of the game. His role model is Manchester City player Jone Stones.
