SOCCER NEWS - Imizamo Yethu Secondary School’s U19 soccer team made an impressive start to their Kay Motsepe Schools Cup campaign on Thursday afternoon, 9 April, edging Jonga High School 1-0 in a tightly contested game at Thembalethu Stadium.
The decisive moment came in the first half when left-footed wing-back Oyama “Oscar” Bontiya produced a moment of brilliance.
Following a foul just outside the box, Bontiya unleashed a powerful long-range strike that beat Jonga goalkeeper Kwanele Malamba, securing the only goal of the match and handing Imizamo Yethu their opening victory.
Both teams delivered an energetic and balanced performance in the second half, creating several scoring opportunities. Imizamo Yethu forward Linamandla Jadan Mtonga came close to extending the lead but was unable to convert his chances. Despite the attacking efforts from both sides, neither team managed to find the net again, with the match ending 1-0.
George Royal Academy dominates in statement win
Defending regional champions George Royal Academy continued their fine form in the competition with a commanding 3-0 victory over Thembalethu High School.
The Academy side looked confident from the outset, controlling possession and attacking with intent. Liyabona Fulamde opened the scoring with a well-taken effort from the left flank, giving his team an early advantage.
Thembalethu High struggled to respond, as the Academy maintained their structure and applied sustained pressure. In the second half, Thando Balani added another goal before Fulamde completed his brace, sealing a comprehensive win.
Schools eye regional qualification
The Kay Motsepe Schools Cup features several local high schools, including Imizamo Yethu, Jonga High, Thembalethu High, George Royal Academy, Eden Technical High and Heatherlands High.
The winner of the local competition will go on to represent George at the regional Kay Motsepe U19 finals later this year, as teams continue to battle for top honours in one of the country’s most competitive school tournaments.
