For an event which faced potential cancellation due to financial constraints, the 21st Outeniqua Chair Challenge (OCC) on Saturday 15 March, was a massive success with about 600 athletes participating.
The event was revitalised by a generous R250 000 sponsorship from the Garden Route Mall shortly after the threat of cancellation and a call for help.
The OCC is renowned for attracting top-tier talent, and this year was no exception, with competitors including local bodybuilder and athlete Shaun Butler, chairman of the Disabled Road Race Foundation, 17-year-old rising star Zach Legward, legendary athlete Stuart McCreadie and Paralympic gold medalist Pieter du Preez.
McCreadie clinched victory in the 42.2km senior male paraplegic category, crossing the finish line well ahead of his competitors. In a bold move, Legward decided on the eve of the race to upgrade from the 21.1km to the 42.2km marathon, joining his friend and rival Butler in the longer distance.
The OCC offers a variety of race categories to accommodate a wide range of participants, including a 10km race, 5km fun run, and the entertaining "kaskar" race. The latter features businesses sponsoring soapbox-style carts, which teams push while one member steers, adding a lighthearted element to the day's events.
In celebration of its 21st anniversary, organisers introduced a 5km open category, inviting individuals with any disabilities to participate.
The event was well organised with no serious injuries reported.
The OCC's significance extends beyond national borders, attracting international competitors. This year's race saw participation from esteemed athletes from Ghana, Zimbabwe, Botswana, and Namibia.
Official race results are scheduled for release on Monday 17 March.
