SCHOOL NEWS - York High's learners delivered an impressive performance at the South Cape Arts Festival in August, earning top results across vocal, instrumental and ensemble categories.
Grade Nine vocalists Ecclecia Prins and Elam Hlahane, lead singers of the York High School Band, achieved A+++ results for their solos and duet, and Elam earned an exceptional 98% for his vocal solo.
Other strong performances came from Thomas Barkhuysen (Grade Nine), who sang, played the ukulele and showcased a three-dimensional flute he designed himself. Snawo Madolwana (Grade Nine), Carmen Erasmus (Grade Eight) and Siya Kokela (Grade 12) also achieved results ranging from A+ to A++.
Under the direction of Elrine Lottino, the York Choir and Band both earned A+++ results and were invited to perform at the festival's gala event on 5 September.
The York Choir shared the best vocal ensemble trophy with the Langenhoven Gymnasium Choir, both scoring 95%.
Grade Nine pianist Jake Pheiffer won the best instrumental performance in the Western art music division, while Grade 12 vocalist Izibele Kenene earned A+++ for her vocal performance and went on to win best contemporary vocalist at the gala. She also received A++ for her original drama monologue.
