SCHOOL NEWS - Discarded materials are being transformed into creative fashion statements as learners from five George schools prepare to showcase their designs at the final of the Designing a Greener Future Competition on Friday, 30 October.
The event starts at 10:00 at the Justice Hall at Thembalethu Magistrate’s Court.
Learners from Parkdene High, Pacaltsdorp High, Imizamo High and Jonga High schools will model outfits they designed and made entirely from waste materials.
The annual competition uses fashion and creativity to raise awareness of environmental issues such as illegal dumping, littering and global warming.
“The aim is to promote environmental responsibility among young people,” said Thembalethu police constable Mona Slinger, the main organiser.
The initiative brings together several stakeholders, including Henque Waste, Polyco, the Garden Route District Municipality, the George Business Chamber and the Western Cape Education Department.
The creative designs of Ethan Draai and Oscar Williams have earned them each a place on stage in Friday’s final. Photo: Supplied
