GEORGE NEWS & VIDEO - On Friday, 10 May, George Executive Mayor, Leon van Wyk, will be sworn in as a Member of the Western Cape Provincial Parliament.
Following an exhaustive and thorough selection process, Van Wyk was ranked in an electable position on the Provincial list and the DA Western Cape Provincial Executive Committee approved that he takes up the vacant seat left by former member, Derick America.
During his tenure as Executive Mayor in George, some of the successes include:
• Implement effective governance following his election to office in May 2020 with consequence management being implemented and restoring clean audits; increased productivity levels across municipality.
• Improving service delivery to a high standard, undertaking preventative maintenance on water, waste water and electricity networks in anticipation of aging infrastructure failure.
• Proactively driving infrastructure upgrades and securing significant grant funding for water and waste water infrastructure that has been undertaken at same time as semi-gration into the Western Cape and George specifically has increased, thereby signalling attractiveness for investment.
• Proactively driving own renewable energy generation to mitigate Eskom’s load shedding.
• Opened up Go George bus routes into Thembalethu that had remained a stumbling block for years.
• Increased levels of facilitation and enabling of economic activity ranging from events, blue flag beaches, contact centres, education and training, industrial parks, airport upgrade to first steps towards film studio. Smarter turnaround times for building plans and land use applications.
