GEORGE NEWSFLASH - George Mayor Melvin Naik has until this afternoon to give reasons why the DA should reinstate his party membership. This comes after Naik received a letter from the DA’s Federal Legal Commission late yesterday afternoon, Monday 4 June, informing him of the cessation of his DA membership.
DA regional chairperson Jaco Londt confirmed that Naik was served with a letter and given 24 hours to give reasons why he should be accepted back into the DA fold.
“Allegations against Naik include that he canvassed members of the DA to join the opposition and support the opposition in a motion of no confidence against the Speaker (Gerrit Pretorius) and deputy mayor (Charlotte Clarke).”
These motions were submitted by the ANC for discussion at the council meeting on Thursday 31 May. The ANC withdrew the motions when it was established that council members couldn’t stay anonymous when voting for or against the motions, but had to vote by a show of hands.
Naik declined to comment.
The termination of his membership means he will no longer be a councillor or mayor.
