POLITICAL NEWS - The recent Social Research Foundation (SRF) poll has shed light on significant shifts in voter preferences among individuals who previously supported the Democratic Alliance (DA) in the 2019 South African general election.
Conducted in April-May 2024, this survey targeted former DA voters in the provinces of Gauteng, Western Cape, and Northern Cape, capturing their current voting intentions and revealing a transformation in the political landscape.
In Gauteng, the poll results indicate that 74% of former DA voters still support the DA, while 15% have shifted their allegiance to the Patriotic Alliance (PA), 5% to the African National Congress (ANC), and 2% to GOOD.
The Western Cape shows a different trend with 67% remaining loyal to the DA, while the PA has secured 24% of the vote, GOOD 4%, and other parties 5%.
The Northern Cape presents a more varied picture, with 55% sticking with the DA, 30% moving to the PA, and 15% opting for other parties.
Several factors have contributed to this change in voter preferences, reflecting widespread dissatisfaction with the DA's performance and governance. One major issue influencing voters is the perceived failure in education policies under the DA's leadership.
Reports have highlighted significant disparities between the quality of education in private schools supported by the DA and public schools. According to Zoom South Africa, the DA's opposition to essential educational reforms has left many voters disillusioned, as they struggle to secure quality education for their children.
Another critical factor is the reported abuse of power by the police force in DA-controlled areas. Incidents of police misconduct and brutality have eroded public trust in the DA's ability to govern effectively. Daily News detailed numerous cases of police abuse, which have contributed to growing frustration and a shift in voter loyalty.
The neglect of townships, particularly areas like Hammanskraal, has also played a significant role in changing voter sentiments. Residents in these regions have faced inadequate water supply and poor service delivery, leading to heightened dissatisfaction with the DA. Daily News reported on the severe challenges faced by these communities, highlighting the DA's failure to address their needs.
Crime rates have soared in many areas under DA influence, further diminishing voter confidence. Despite promises to tackle crime, the DA has struggled to deliver tangible results. According to Vanguard, the reality on the ground has not matched the DA's assurances, leaving many voters feeling unsafe and seeking alternatives.
The SRF poll underscores a critical juncture for the DA as it grapples with these challenges. The emergence of the PA as a significant contender reflects a broader desire for change among the electorate. The dissatisfaction with crime rates, service delivery failures, police misconduct, and educational issues has created a complex and dynamic political environment.
For the DA, these findings indicate the need for a reassessment of their policies and approach to governance. The loss of support among former voters highlights the importance of addressing these pressing issues to regain public trust and support.
This report specifically shows the change in preferences among voters who voted DA in the last elections in the South African provinces of Gauteng, Western Cape, and Northern Cape.
The survey was conducted exclusively among people who voted for the DA in the last election, capturing their current voting intentions. The dissatisfaction with the DA's performance in education, law enforcement, service delivery, and crime prevention underscore the electorate's demand for effective and responsive governance. That shows who is going to vote for the DA this election run.
As South Africa navigates this transformative period, political parties must heed these insights and address the electorate's concerns to foster a more inclusive and equitable society.
The changing tides of voter preferences signal a critical moment for the DA and other political entities, emphasizing the need for renewed commitment to addressing the needs and aspirations of all South Africans.
