NATIONAL NEWS - A 44-year-old man has received four life jail terms plus 39 years in prison for kidnapping, rape, murder, robbery and possession of an illegal firearm, Mpumalanga police said on Thursday.
Patrick Mangena Masuku was convicted and sentenced on Wednesday by the Nelspruit circuit of the Pretoria High Court, Lt-Col Leonard Hlathi said in a statement.
Masuku and Bhutini Moagi, 30, hijacked a car containing Godfrey Madala Mhlongo and a 24-year-old woman at Tsuvulani Trust in Mhala, near Bushbuckridge, in August 2008.
"They drove off with the victims and in the process, Mhlongo was fatally shot," said Hlathi.
The two men took the 24-year-old woman to a house in Violet Bank, Bushbuckridge, and gang-raped her. They then stripped the hijacked car and set it alight.
During the pair's arrest in September 2010, Moagi was killed by the police when he attacked them with a panga.
Masuku is already serving a 20-year prison sentenced imposed by the Mhala Regional Court in 2010 for similar crimes he committed in Bushbuckridge in 2006.
The sentences imposed on Wednesday would run concurrently with this sentence, said Hlathi.
