Water Affairs minister Nomvula Mokonyane appealed to South Africans to work with the government in fighting drought.
Ernest Sonnenberg, MayCo member for the City of Cape Town's Utility Services said the municipality would introduce a 20% water saving target as early as 1 December 2015.
This will effectively mean that water restrictions will have to be introduced.
The call for a 20% target comes following a proposal from the Western Cape Water Supply System (WCWSS) to increase their water saving.
Though the crisis may not be as severe this year, the water restrictions will ensure that Cape Town residents have sufficient water supply for next season.
