Western Cape wine industry assesses damage following recent wild fires

NATIONAL NEWS - The Western Cape Wine industry is counting the cost of the damage to vineyards following recent wild fires.

The cost of each hectare of vineyard lost to blazes is estimated at R240, 000.

A fire raged for several days in the Simonsberg area last week.

At least 3,000 hectares of vegetation, including vineyards, were ravaged.

Wine industry body VinPro says the R 240,000 figure includes loss of income and additional labour to uproot vines which have been scorched.

The re-establishment of vines is also included in the cost estimate.
