NATIONAL NEWS - Paramedics arrived at a chaotic scene where several bystanders were injured after a biker performing a wheelie during an illegal street race on Steve Biko Drive in The Moot, Pretoria, crashed into a car before colliding with the crowd.
According to Xander Loubser from Best Care Medical Services, the collision occurred around 18:00 on Sunday.
Pretoria Rekord reports the incident took place as hundreds of adrenaline junkies gathered along Steve Biko Drive to watch illegal street races, a practice that has gone on for years and become a Sunday tradition for some.
Loubser said paramedics encountered a chaotic scene with injured bystanders scattered across the area.
Several ambulance services attended to the scene, and paramedics began assessing those with the most severe injuries.
He said the 28-year-old biker sustained critical injuries.
“The man sustained several leg and arm fractures as well as back injuries; he was stabilised on the scene before he was transported to a nearby hospital for further treatment.”
Loubser added that about seven bystanders sustained injuries ranging from moderate to severe.
Local police spokesperson Captain Johan van Dyk warned that racers involved in accidents causing injuries could face charges of reckless driving and culpable homicide if caught.
Over the years, Rekord has reported numerous deaths and accidents linked to illegal street racing on Steve Biko Drive.
Meanwhile, residents near the corner of Ben Swart Street and Steve Biko Road in Gezina have expressed frustration over the weekly drag racing.
While most people use Sundays to relax, residents in this area are forced to endure the relentless noise of revving engines.
