Charmaine van der Merwe (25) should have followed a number of prescribed steps, said Dr Mathabo Mathebula, the deputy CEO of the hospital.
Van der Merwe, who told Rekord she had a learning disability, said a doctor at the hospital refused her request to be sterilised after she gave birth last Tuesday.
She said she asked for the sterilisation months before the birth of her second child.
Mathebula said a patient with a mental capacity problem had to obtain written consent from a spouse, guardian or parent to be sterilised. The approval of the head of the health facility concerned was also required.
