Speaking to Automotive News at the Vienna Motor Symposium last month, Volkswagen powertrain chief, Friedrich Eichler, when asked about the 'box, merely stated, "Two months ago, I had the prototype crushed".
Praised at its unveiling by then CEO Martin Winterkorn for its "extremely wide-gear ratio spread", the new self-shifter was meant for high torque engines, but according to the report, envisioned during Volkswagen's "bigger is better" engineering approach of the past.
Eichler has however hinted that the 'box could return as some stage, remarking, "Of course I have saved the data".
