MOTORING NEWS AND VIDEO - Car lovers flocked to Wilderness last Saturday morning, 14 January, where local and neighbouring motor clubs did what they do best - sharing their passion with the rest.
Through its new initiative, Cars@Coffee, the Garden Route Motor Club (GRMC) provided this opportunity for informal engagement on the village green opposite the Wilderness Hotel.
According to Abigail Brooks, secretary of the GRMC, some 45 vehicles registered for the event. However, quite a few enthusiasts spontaneously rocked up with their wheels for the social gathering.
The cars ranged from a 1982 DeLorean DMC 12, which is said to be the only one on the road in SA, a Lamborghini 2018 and a 2015 F Type Jaguar. Some old and new Ford Mustangs joined the show, along with Morris Minors, a Shelby Cobra, Corvette, some MGBs and a 1954 Chevrolet.
"Cars@Coffee is a platform started by the Garden Route Motor Club (GRMC) last year," said Brooks. "Our aim is for it to be something that facilitates positive engagement between club members and friends with classic and collectible cars and the public. It's informal, free and intended to run as a 'bonnets up' event where owners personally share and show their cars."
The events are open to GRMC club members, members from sister clubs such as the MG Club and the Southern Cape Old Car Club, and anyone who has a car they'd like to display. "We are particularly keen on making our events more engaging for a younger audience who often are more interested in modern performance vehicles than classic cars," said Brooks. "We've had good support from the George-based 'ST Crew' who are bringing a collection of Ford Focus ST 225s, and older cars with modern engines. For this event, I've also been contacted by the George Air-Cooled club who brought several VW beetles and beach buggies."
