I’m not quite sure what the fuss is with these coupe-like SUVs but they seem to be quite popular. BMW started with the X6 and Mercedes-Benz followed suit with the GLE coupé. BMW then decided to give customers the X4, a miniature X6 and now Mercedes-Benz has given us the GLC coupé.
The most noticeable feature is the cars coupé -esque slopping roof line. It looks very similar to the bigger GLE coupe. I also noticed that the front end has been enhanced slightly. The striking feature of the front end is its dominant, steeply raked diamond radiator grille. At the rear the styling of the tail end gives added emphasis to the vehicle's coupé genes. With its pronounced shoulders, muscular bumper design with integral exhaust tailpipe trims as well as under-guard in the form of a diffuser, the wide tail end of the car underlines the vehicle's athletic looks.
Inside it’s pretty much exactly the same as the GLC on which it is based, which is equally similar to the C-Class. As one would expect there are loads of buttons which control all sorts of things. I particularly like the thin tablet-like screen mounted on the dashboard, I also like the toggle switch which controls it. It is just so neatly and thoughtfully designed.
Now this being a vehicle that needs to fulfils an owner’s active lifestyle as well as everyday demands the car will come with Dynamic Select with the five transmission modes Eco, Comfort, Sport, Sport+ and Individual. Dynamic Body Control sports suspension with steel springing and adjustable damping is optionally available. Also with this option, Dynamic Select allows the driver to adapt the individual character of the vehicle.
As for the power-plants, the new coupé is provisionally available in a choice of petrol and diesel engine variants: customers have the choice of three diesel engines and three petrol engines. The vehicle that was on display was a GLC 350d 4Matic coupe with a V6 diesel engine. We can also expect the GLC 220d 4Matic coupe and GLC 250d 4Matic to join that line up as well.
According to the Mercedes-Benz SA website the starting price for the range is R 735 900.
