Proof of this can be seen in the fact that around 14 424 H-1 buses and around 2 272 panel vans have been sold since its introduction in 2009. It was, however, time for the brand to update this model, which it did towards the end June. I attended the media launch of the new H-1 to see if it still has the appeal to compete with the VW and the Vito.
The looks
Let’s be honest, a bus is not something that excites the senses in the same way as a performance car does, but it does offer a heap of practicality and the way in which the market is moving, loads of comfort and safety features as well. What’s more is that many commercial vehicles are adopting the design language of their lifestyle-oriented siblings, with the H-1 being no different.
The previous model didn’t offer much in terms of looks with a somewhat vanilla design. This new model, however, features a design more in-line with that of other Hyundai models.
Most noticeable is the grille which features chrome detailing while the front bumper has been redesigned to give the H-1 a more modern look. Other new elements are the headlights, which are smaller and horizontal compared to the vertical, rounded design that has been an H-1 hallmark until now.
Not much has changed when viewed from the side apart from the inclusion of new 17-inch alloy wheels on the new flagship Elite model. At the rear, one can expect modernised taillights and a similar aesthetic to the outgoing version.
Interior
The interior of a vehicle such as the H-1 is very important as it needs to offer space, comfort, be durable, practical and well ventilated. The H-1 is not just a vehicle bought by large families, it is a vehicle which is used by companies, government institutions, and fleet companies.
In this case, the new model maintains its appeal in that it does offer all of the aforementioned traits and more. Hyundai has added its touchscreen infotainment system which can be found on other models within its range. It is however only available on the Elite and adds USB, Bluetooth and for an additional R2 522, an SD card with satellite navigation. There is also a reach and height adjustable multi-function steering wheel and well as cruise control.
I found the interior very spacious and will have no problem in seating eight passengers in relative comfort. Rear climate control is also a plus, as are the adjustable seats. Despite these updates and added comfort, the interior still feels like that of a rental bus with the grey leather, a selection of plastics and exposed seat mountings which don't inspire much in terms of premium appeal compared to a Mercedes-Benz V-class, although in its defence, the H-1 does not carry the price tag of the three-pointed start either.
Under the bonnet
As before, Hyundai is offering the H-1 with a choice of two engines, a naturally aspirated 2.4-litre petrol making 126kW/224Nm in the Executive model and a 2.5-litre CRDI turbodiesel in the Elite that delivers 125kW/441Nm.
While the Executive sends its power to the rear wheels via a five-speed manual gearbox, the Elite opts for a five-speed automatic, which was also the only variant available for the media to drive. Being the leisure-based variant, the Elite also has a braked towing capacity of 1 500kg.
On the road
Where the H-1 shines is with its road manners, as it feels more like a passenger car than a large bus. It offers a comfortable ride which will definitely be an advantage on those long family holiday trips or when one wants to impress clients.
I also found that interior noise levels were at a minimum, which means that you don’t need to shout at each other in order to have a conversation. The H-1 also offers safety features such as Electronic Stability Programme, front and side airbags and ABS brakes. The rear-view camera which is displayed in the rear-view mirror is also a bonus.
Verdict
The H-1 has, since its introduction, offered customers a rather noteworthy alternative within the segment and this new model has, in my opinion, improved upon that appeal. With a starting price of just R499 900, it most definitely stands its ground when pitted against its key rivals.
