Claimed to “rewrite the rules of today's fastest growing segment using [its] manufacturer's trademark language”, the Tonale takes its name from the Tonale Pass located in the Italian Alps, and according to Alfa Romeo, “strikes the perfect blend of valued heritage and anticipation of new precepts”.
Taking styling inspiration from the Giulia and Stelvio under which it will be slot-in, the Tonale is further said to include exterior details from past Alfa Romeo models, such as the side profile derived from the Duetto and Disco Volante Spider, the six pod headlight arrangement reminiscent of the SZ Brera and the 21-inch tele-dial alloy wheels wrapped in Pirelli rubber that first appeared on the 33 Stradale.
Inside, the interior is said to be driver focused with a minimalist design highlighted by a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, extensive use of leather, aluminium and Alcantara, a retro three-spoke steering wheel, vents featuring build-in temperature displays and a brand-new 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system with two new settings; Alfisti that provides a connected experience with Alfa Romeo approved clubs and communities in addition to happenings within the brand, and Paddock that previews available interior and exterior features, as well as access to Alfa Romeo branded merchandise on offer.
Reported to be based on parent company Fiat-Chrysler Automobiles (FCA)’s Small Wide 4x4 platform that underpins the Jeep Renegade and Fiat 500X, the Tonale incorporates a plug-in hybrid drivetrain with two modes; Dynamic and Dual Power, the latter allowing for the maximum amount of twist to be delivered by the internal combustion engine and electric motor.
Included in the infotainment setup, the E-mozione button allows the driver to change settings relating to the brakes, throttle and steering, while Alfa Romeo’s DNA switch has been retained but adopted to suit the Tonale. No further details were revealed.
