GEORGE NEWS - The SPCA is aware of cases of canine distemper and parvovirus being reported in the George area.
If your dog is showing any of the following symptoms please contact your local vet urgently. Do not take the animal into the vet reception until you are called as both are highly contagious.
Symptoms of parvovirus: lethargy, loss of appetite, abdominal pain and bloating, vomiting and severe, often bloody diarrhoea.
Symptoms of canine distemper: watery to pus-like discharge from the eyes, fever, nasal discharge, coughing, lethargy, reduced appetite and vomiting.
As a precaution the following measures are being taken at the George SPCA:
- No adoptions for the next 2 weeks
- No boarders for the next 2 weeks
- No dog walking or cat cuddling for the next 2 weeks
We shall continue with treatments in an isolated location in order to avoid cross contamination. All treatment animals will return home on the day of treatment.
