GEORGE NEWS - Firstcare Wildfire Support is a registered non-profit organisation that provides firefighting services in the Garden Route.
On Sunday 3 November they had an exciting day when they opened a satellite station in Wilderness Heights.
The function was well attended by Wilderness residents who pledged their support to the initiative.
As well as being an operational base for their team, the facilities will be available for other emergency services as a forward control point when needed. "Preparation for a helicopter landing zone will also start within the next week," said Firstcare Wildfire Support's operational director, Christo Theron.
"This landing zone will be for the firefighting helicopters as a refuelling point when working in the Wilderness / Hoekwil areas. This will drastically improve turnaround times to the fire lines as the chopper will not have to fly to Denneoord to refuel. A huge thank you must go to Dane Izatt of Garden Route Generators for making the land and resources available for this initiative."
