GEORGE NEWS - The September meetings of the University of the Third Age (U3A) open with Armchair Travel on Wednesday the 14th.
At this meeting, Chris Daly will give an audiovisual presentation on his visit to several destinations in the United Kingdom.
Daly's interest in photography started at the age of fifteen. Over the years he continued this interest and with the advent of digital photography, he became active in camera clubs and successfully entered numerous national and international salons.
Over the past twenty years he has developed his skills in landscape photography covering South Africa, Namibia and a number of overseas destinations. The meeting starts at 10:30.
On Friday 23 September a new series will start, called "Treasures in your home". This involves members presenting short talks on some interesting treasures in their homes.
The new feature promises to be fascinating, so come along and learn about Dalton Lambeth ceramic ware, Bushman hunting gear, the George fairy artist, Ruby Reeves, and the Coventry hoard of Henry 3rd silver pennies. Tea will be at 10:00 and the talk starts at 10:30.
At International Affairs on Monday 26 September Natie de Swardt will lead a discussion on the very topical subject of "The foreign policy of South Africa". The discussion starts at 14:00.
At the general meeting on Wednesday 28 September, Alwyn van der Merwe will present "Headwinds for the global economy and its impact on the financial markets".
Van der Merwe has 32 years' experience in the financial services industry and is currently the director of investments for Sanlam Private Wealth. Under his leadership the investment team manages a range of offshore and local multi-asset portfolios and several equity-specific mandates.
Tea is at 10:00 and the talk starts at 10:30.
