GEORGE NEWS - A 21-year-old man was stabbed and killed in Thembalethu last Sunday in a suspected love triangle.
The incident happened near Shop 1 tavern in Ramaphosa. According to Lieutenant-Colonel Eric Julies, the deceased and the suspect (23) had an argument at about 02:00 in the morning and a fight broke out between the two.
Prior to the argument, the deceased (boyfriend) had a confrontation with his girlfriend, who then went to report the deceased to a previous love interest (ex-boyfriend). Allegedly, the ex-boyfriend then confronted the boyfriend in defence of the girl, slapping him twice.
The boyfriend allegedly returned the slapping, after which the ex-boyfriend fetched a knife from his home and upon his return, stabbed the boyfriend, who died on the scene.
Not far from this scene another murder took place with a 31-year-old man being stabbed to death by two 18-year-olds. Julies said the police are still investigating the motive of the murder, but the fight could have been gang-related.
Julies also attributed these incidents to alcohol abuse in the area. "We have a problem with Tshisanyamas because they are not regulated. People drink at these places from Saturday until the early hours of Sunday morning."
The suspects in both cases appeared in the George Magistrate's Court on Wednesday 6 March and the cases were postponed to 19 March for bail application.
Murders
For the past two years, the Thembalethu community has been battling to combat violence which in most cases led to the killing of young people. It seems that this matter is far from being resolved as murders continue to be on the rise.

December 2017
On 3 December 2017, two men died at Jam Alley Tavern when a man stabbed to death a well-known Thembalethu football icon, and was apprehended shortly after by community members who pelted him with stones and beer bottles and set him alight. The man died on his way to the hospital. Earlier that day, a sleeping man was stabbed to death in Ntaka Street. In another incident, a 15-year-old boy was stabbed to death by a 14-year-old girl.
On 10 December a 26-year-old man was stabbed to death during an argument over R6.
January 2018
The year started with a murder on 1 January in Zone 5, where the body of an unidentified man was found in the early hours of Monday in someone's yard. According to the police the body had stab wounds. A 23-year-old man was stabbed to death on Sunday 7 January after he was involved in an argument over a cellphone. A 23-year-old was arrested in connection with his murder.
February 2018
Sinovuyo Betsha (15) of Ncamazana Street was allegedly assaulted with pangas by a group of boys who robbed him of his Adidas tekkies and K-Way hoody. The incident occurred on the night of 10 to 11 February.
April 2018
Avuye Thyuthuza (15) was killed by a group of young men, allegedly out of jealousy of his fashionable clothes.
