GARDEN ROUTE | BITOU NEWS -Two suspects were arrested near Harkerville, on the N2 between Knysna and Plettenberg Bay, after being caught with a car stolen in George.
According to Southern Cape police spokesperson Sgt Chris Spies, the incident occurred at about 16:30 yesterday, Friday 28 October after Southern Cape rural flying squad officers spotted a stolen motor vehicle.
The members were patrolling the highway when they spotted a vehicle, a Toyota Tazz reported as stolen in George, travelling towards Plettenberg Bay with two occupants on board, Spies said.
A car chase ensued and the vehicle came to a halt in bushes after leaving the road. The driver of the vehicle fled on foot. The flying squad members gave chase and found him hiding in a ditch. "Police arrested the driver and his passenger on charges of possession of stolen property," Spies said.
A case of theft of motor vehicle was also opened in George for further investigation.
"The suspects, aged 24 and 36, remain in police custody. They will appear in court once charged," Spies said.
Despite social media reports suggesting that shots might have been fired at the scene, Spies clarified that reports indicated no shots were fired.
