GEORGE NEWS - George Municipality looks forward to once again hosting a delegation from our sister city, Tacoma in the USA.
A delegation led by the Mayor of Tacoma, Victoria Woodards arrives at George Airport on Saturday 22 February and will be met by a Councillor, the George Sister Committee and the South Cape Children’s Choir.
The official welcoming Gala Dinner takes place on Saturday evening and the delegates will participate in a packed itinerary of visits prior to departing.
This sister city agreement is now 23 years old and has over the years initiated a number of projects that are vital and remain ongoing, such as the Phambili Battered Women’s Refuge.
The sister city agreement was entered into due to the similarities between George and Tacoma – both are considered areas of great scenic beauty along a coastline; as well as population numbers, business activities, infrastructures and organisations being of a similar nature.
The sister city agreement allows for a legal or social agreement to promote cultural and commercial ties.
The last visit to George took place in August 2017 during Women’s Month, arranged to emphasise the empowerment of women.
