GEORGE NEWS AND VIDEO - South Cape College students are once again protesting to be heard - not only by NSFAS, but also the South Cape College George Campus.
The spokesperson for the SRC, Wam Achuma Ngqandu, says 42% of the students have not received their bursaries and their situation is looking bleak.
He says all of the students protesting today have been left homeless. They are now asking for donations of food and shelter.
“Our tuition money has not been paid and we were supposed to steadily start classes this weekend. They have also changed the rules, so students can only qualify for travel or accommodation money.” Ngqandu says the students have been in contact with their parents who have been trying to support them from home, but many have lost their jobs due to Covid.
They are now sending out the same plea to the college, asking that it makes a plan to support its students.
According to Olwethu Xawuka, the chairman of the SRC, the campus has been closed since last Thursday when they started this protest action. “No one is going in. It is shut down till this is sorted out,” he says.
