GEORGE NEWS - The August George Good Citizen has been awarded to Pearly and Gerald Lewis of Shydac, a safe haven for youth development and aftercare in Parkdene.
Pearley and her husband, Gerald, established Shydac three years ago to create an environment where children can be safe from peer pressure and other bad influences. The couple have first-hand experience of the negative effects of peer pressure.
"My son lost himself in the world of drugs because of the bad influence of some of his peers. It was a very difficult time in my life and my wish is to spare parents the grief and trauma that I went through. Thank God my son is much better today," says Pearley.
She says she and her husband have been privileged to build a safe haven for the kids of Parkdene.
"Our aim is to create an environment where parents can play pool, table tennis, dominoes and other games with their kids and build friendships with other parents. "We would like to establish safe havens all over George where children can do their homework - a platform where we can teach them the dangers of drugs and crime."
Shydac does recycling to help with their daily expenses. "We are extremely grateful for all our contributors. Without them our goals would be unreachable. Shydac would like to thank the citizens of George for the trust you put in us by awarding us the good citizenship certificate for August."
