Rotarians celebrate 60 years

GEORGE NEWS - The Rotary Club of George celebrated its 60th anniversary of the Charter of the club in fine style during a buffet lunch at the Hyatt Regency Hotel, Oubaai.

In the beautiful setting of the hotel the mood was jovial amongst the Rotarians and guests who enjoyed celebrating this important milestone.

The Assistant Governor of the Western Cape and 15 past presidents attend, amongst others, the function.
Greetings hailed from sister clubs and service organisations and the club was commended on its ability to live up to the Rotary motto of "Service above Self".

The fundamental ability of Rotarians to identify specific community projects and utilise their business connections within the Rotary organisation internationally as well as the local business community has seen the birth of many a matching grant project.

From an air ambulance to a rescue boat as well as various assortment of medical equipment, patient transporters, motor vehicles and even wheel chairs, computers and containers were the testimonies of successful Rotary projects.
Many smaller projects such as a speech competition, soap distribution, dictionary and educational reading material distribution are all part of the club’s contribution to the community of George.

A Paul Harris Fellowship was awarded to Rotarian Christo Prins while Past President Charles Rowe and Past President Wilhelm van der Vyver were awarded Paul Harris Fellowship Safire. These prestigious Paul Harris fellowships were awarded for excellent services to the Rotary organisation.

A lucky draw had guests smiling while lugging bouma’s, folding chairs, wine and suitcases home after a very pleasant few hours spent together.

On behalf of Rotary, President Jenny Becker thanked their sponsors for the wine and gifts and also expressed their appreciation to the local community for their valuable support over the last past 60 years.
