GEORGE NEWS - If all goes according to plan, beneficiaries of the brightly coloured houses at the entrance to Rosedale can celebrate this Christmas in their new homes.
A contractor has been appointed to complete the building of retaining walls on these units, called Flisp houses (Finance Linked Individual Subsidy Programme*).
"The process of evaluating the quotations was finalised on 17 August and the contractor [Asla] has been appointed to commence with the work and it is anticipated that they will complete the work within the next month," said Western Cape Minister of Human Settlements Tertuis Simmers.
According to Simmers the delay in completing the retaining walls was due to contractual disputes between the department and the contractor.
"The department resolved to rather request quotations to complete the outstanding work, including cleaning of the erven at competitive rates," said Simmers. "The original contractor [Raubex] is also busy finalising electrical inspections on the units. Covid-19 and the alert Level 5 regulations kept all construction sites closed for nearly three months." Asla will complete the outstanding work that includes cleaning of plots.
According to Simmers said the department is working on handing over these specific units by Christmas.
"The BNG units (called RDP in old terms), which is the fully state-subsidised units for qualifying beneficiaries on the rest of the site, will be ready for occupation once George Municipality finalises the bulk infrastructure work," he said.
* Flisp units are bonded units between a qualifying Flisp beneficiary and a bank.
