GEORGE NEWS - Four break-ins in four months at the Rooirivier Sports Club in Rooirivierrif has the owner, Alet Grobler, at her wits' end. No amount of alarms, CCTV cameras, security beams or security glass seems to deter the culprits.
The first robbery took place in September 2017 and was followed by another in November.
The two latest robberies occurred within days of each other in the past week. During the early hours of Friday morning
5 January, the manager of the clubhouse, Wayne Weyer, was notified by M Sec Security of yet another break-in at the club.
When Weyer arrived, the culprits were long gone and he was left with a smashed security window and thousands of rands' worth of missing goods.
According to Weyer the thieves gained access to the clubhouse by smashing the security window with a big rock. They then proceeded to take around R7 000 or R8 000's worth of stock including liquor, lighters and golf shoes.
"These guys are so quick. They took about 40 seconds from breaking the window to getting out," he said.
On the CCTV footage, three men could be seen approaching the window. They threw the rock through the window, setting off the alarm, after which one of them ran away. The two remaining men, with covered faces, then started looting the bar. They also attempted to smash the till, but failed and left the premises.
On Tuesday morning this week two weedeaters were stolen from the shed adjacent to the club house. On CCTV video footage, two men were seen prowling the premises. "We are busy with security upgrades on the premises. It's getting ridiculous now," said Grobler.
No arrests have been made.
The police are asking anyone with information to contact the George detective branch on 044 803 4715 or Crime Stop on 08600 10111.
* In September last year a break-in occurred at George United Football Club's clubhouse on the same property. Uniforms, trophies and documents were stolen.
