GEORGE NEWS - George Municipality says following torrential rains since yesterday, several reports of flooding have been received this morning and emergency teams are on standby and attending to the reported incidents.
Alicia Niemand, a resident in Hope Street, said their back garden and pool area are flooded, the same as last year in the November floods.
"It is the municipality's storm water drains that are blocked, but the fire services have arrived and are attending to the problem."
She said their kitchen and her daughter's bedroom as well as a store room have been flooded.
Streets flooded include:
• Victoria Street
• Merriman Street
• Hope Street
• CJ Langehoven Street
• Courtenay Street (Courtenay Street flooding left lane. Motorists to be careful travelling in the left lane opposite Kentucky and Prestons / West Coast Fisheries).
• Market Street
• St Leger street
Water starting to come into the kitchen.
The Traffic Department is closing Union and Hope Street
"Some Go George routes have been suspended due to floods as several roads are flooded. Accessibility all over town is being assessed," says Chantel Edwards, communications chief.
Please note the following routes have been suspended with immediate effect due to flooding:
• R9 Industrial Loop
• R14 Pacaltsdorp Industrial
• R18 Parkdene - Blanco

Refuse collection
Refuse collection for today is also delayed due to heavy rain. Updates will be provided as soon as the teams are able to resume working.
The areas where refuse is collected on Fridays are: Glenwood, Loeriepark, Eden, Genevafontein, Denverpark, Bergsig and Eastern Extension.
Landfill site inaccessible
The municipal landfill site is currently also inaccessible due to flooding. Please note garden refuse and builders rubble can not be dropped of, ONLY household refuse can be accepted until further notice.
George received 69mm of rain up to 08:00 this morning (24 June) as measured at the Old Water Works.
According to the South African Weather Service, on-and-off showers are expected until noon today, Friday 24 June, with a low probability of light showers for early afternoon. A drier and warmer week is expected from Saturday.
