GEORGE NEWS - Clive Welgemoed from Fernridge was touched by what he considers a miracle on Monday when residents started evacuating their homes.
"Half the people were in a mass hysteria and packed and jumped in their cars to go. Others remained behind for as long as possible. It was very scary, hectic.
"Where do you go? We just took our kids and animals and left.
"If it was not for the Denneoord Neighbourhood Watch, we would have been in the dark and not ready for evacuation when the police came."
A kind man named Paul offered to take his son and aged father-in-law to his home in Kraaibosch where they were safe. Welgemoed returned home later in the day. "At about 16:15, there was the voice of a woman who sang Amazing Grace over a loud hailer (megaphone).
"She also prayed for the fire to turn up the mountain. Shortly after that the wind turned and it started raining. Conditions became such that the choppers could start flying to bomb the area with water."
