GEORGE NEWS AND VIDEO - Island Lake is currently experiencing an active blue-green algal bloom and will be closed until it is declared safe for public use.
Recent test results have confirmed the continued presence of the bacteria, which is known to potentially produce harmful toxins.
Algal blooms are influenced by various environmental factors, including changes in temperature, the breakdown of organic matter, nutrient cycling, and variations in freshwater flow.
The bloom appears to be isolated in Island Lake with no current evidence of similar activity in surrounding lakes.
The lake forms part of the Wilderness Section of the Garden Route National Park and SANParks continues to analyse the best available data to inform its ongoing assessment and response.
