GEORGE NEWS - Thembalethu writer and poet Nkosinathi Menziwa will launch It's Far to the Elbow, the English edition of his award-winning collection of short stories, on Saturday 19 September.
The event will also serve as a celebration of the original Xhosa book, Kukud' Engqinibeni - Ingqokelea yamabali amafutshane nezincoko, which received the Mandela Bay Literary Award for Best Indigenous Language Book in November last year.
The award was a recognition of his commitment to indigenous literature, and receiving it has strengthened his resolve to continue writing and publishing.
Event details
The launch will take place on Saturday, 19 September at the Nkcubeko Youth and Science Centre in Thembalethu from 15:00 to 17:30. Former George resident, advocate, author and poet Thabo Leholo, now based in Cape Town, has been invited as the guest speaker.
The event will also provide a platform for local artists, poets and dancers to showcase their talents.
Menziwa's story
Menziwa, a correctional services officer and long-time Thembalethu resident, has been writing since 1994 and published his first book in 2020. His work focuses on social, political and cultural issues, often drawing attention to challenges faced by people living in impoverished communities.
Menziwa believes literature can play an important role in preserving indigenous languages and cultures while providing readers with stories that reflect their own experiences.
He is also actively involved in assisting and guiding aspiring poets who want to have their work published.
Community focus
Adding a community focus to the launch, Menziwa said 50% of the proceeds from the book sales will be donated to orphanages in Thembalethu.
His latest book is also available at local libraries, allowing readers to access his work beyond the launch event.
