As a separate leg of the department of labour, this office will also cover surrounding areas such as Oudtshoorn, Calitz-dorp, Laingsburg and Beaufort West.
The Southern Cape is known for its high levels of unemployment and the CCMA hopes to improve delivery on its social justice mandate by adding services to this region.
"The official opening of the George office coincides with the CCMA’s 14-year anniversary tomorrow, and marks the significant strides made in delivering access to fair employment rights for all," said Nerina Kahn, national director of the CCMA.
The George office has handled about 4 000 cases since its establishment last year and some 1 400 cases from April to September this year, with an 88% settlement rate of disputes referred. Double the anticipated case load has been received since the office opened, which demonstrates the need for the services in the area.
