GEORGE NEWS - The George Municipality asks residents and businesses to report illegal dumping of waste. This follows after a well-known business brought it to the attention of George Herald that a sizeable dumping site is developing in Binne Street in the George Industria.

In the past few weeks the newspaper has received numerous complaints of illegal dumping and littering.

The letter says that this concerns the businesses in the area, but to a larger degree the community that lives close to the site. The site currently contains plastics, cardboard and even chemical substances that could be fatal if ingested or set alight.

"We have previously assisted in cleaning it up, as it benefits everyone in the area, but consistent dumping and abuse of the area after business hours has left our influence on the situation unsustainable and rather pointless," the letter states. 

"We would be happy to assist again, but we do need some help to fix the situation in a permanent way."

Athane Scholtz, municipal communications officer, responded that the municipality shares their frustration surrounding the ongoing issues of illegal dumping and thanked the business for their contribution towards cleaning the area.

 She said the matter has been reported to the relevant department and has been added to the "hotspot" list for regular monitoring.

The municipality appreciates the help of citizens to help combat illegal dumping and asks residents to:

Please spread the news in your community that dumping of waste is dangerous and a health hazard. Waste should be collected in refuse bags and placed for collection on waste removal days. 

Builders' rubble and waste not suitable for bags must be dropped at the municipal refuse site on the R102 (airport road);

If you can provide names, vehicle registration details or addresses of alleged perpetrators and are willing to make a statement in this regard, please report it to Law Enforcement on 044 801 6350 or sprins@george.gov.za. 

You don't need a photograph of the perpetrator, but it will strengthen the case for a warning or fine to be issued.
