GEORGE NEWS - Two very talented musicians performed at the home of Dr Ronell van Aswegen to a wonderful response from the audience on Friday night, 16 November. The concert was held to raise money for Jodi-Anne Michael and Marlene Vlok toward furthering their music studies.
Jodi-Anne (11) excels in drama, ballet, as a singer and a gymnast. She has won several prestigious awards at eisteddfods and from the George Music Society. She always impresses with her brilliant pure voice and natural performing style. She sang, amongst others, Hallelujah by Leonard Cohen and Summertime by George Gershwin.
She was accompanied by her music teacher, Alet Koch-Lochner, owner of the George Musiekskool.
Marlene Vlok is currently a BMus student at Stellenbosch University, studying under professor Nina Schumann. She is a participant in the annual Stellenbosch International Chamber Music Festival. She has received master classes from Dr Van Aswegen as well as pianist Roberto Plano in Boston in the US.
In 2017 she performed in Ibiza, Spain at the Ibiza International Piano Competition and Festival. Vlok is also an active composer. She played well-known works by Bach, Beethoven, Schubert, Scriabin and Rachmaninoff.
This year marks the 20th anniversary of Dr Van Aswegen's benefit concerts for music students.
