GEORGE NEWS - Former York High learner Marecia Damons (25) won the 2023 Nat Nakasa Award for Media Integrity last Saturday. Damons shares the award with her colleague, Daniel Steyn.
Both are journalists for the Cape Town-based non-profit news agency GroundUp, and received the award for their story on Thabo Bester, who escaped from the Mangaung Correctional Centre after faking his death in a fire in his prison cell in May 2022.
He was on the run for almost a year before he was caught in Arusha, Tanzania on 8 April 2023.
"The WhatsApp messages keep streaming in," said Damons' mom, Maggie Damons.
"She's been working on this story for a while now, and sometimes it is quite dangerous. We are so proud of her." Marecia Damons is currently living in Cape Town.
