GEORGE NEWS - If all goes according to plan, the correct street signage will soon be erected throughout the entire Nelson Mandela Boulevard (NMB).
Albert Street and Sandkraal Road were renamed Nelson Mandela Boulevard after the name change was approved by George Council in August 2013.
A recent complaint lodged by a business owner in the former Albert Street section of NMB about the challenge customers from outside George face when trying to find their premises through international GPS platforms, posed a few questions.
The complaint is that the business addresses in Nelson Mandela Boulevard are not all aligned and updated. Printing business cards and changing letterheads add to the frustration when many residents, including other businesses, still refer to Albert and Sandkraal Road instead of Nelson Mandela Boulevard.
Asked for comment, municipal communications officer Ntobeko Mangqwengqwe said the intention is to have the street name signage in the median of York Street changed to a permanent sign as soon as possible, and to erect street name boards throughout Nelson Mandela Boulevard, once the signs have been made.
He said residents received letters informing them of the change in address from Sandkraal Road and Albert Street to Nelson Mandela Boulevard in 2014. "In the letter we asked property owners to please contact the municipality should they wish for the accounts department to change the site address. The number on the premises is the responsibility of the property owner to change. A twelve-month crossover period was granted to residents."
Mangqwengqwe said the municipality only informs the surveyor general of street name changes or new street naming.
"Google Earth and OpenStreetMap view purchase data from different sources and the municipality is not responsible for any incorrect data displayed on their mapping platform. The municipality has a geographic information system (GIS) public viewer to use in locating a street. This information is updated on a regular basis, and we would gladly assist if you had any queries."
