GEORGE NEWS - Along with George Municipality, we celebrate International Biodiversity Day today, Thursday 22 May, under the theme Harmony with Nature and Sustainable Development.
This annual observance, established by the United Nations, is a day dedicated to raising awareness and understanding of biodiversity issues worldwide.

The 2025 theme emphasises the interconnectedness of biodiversity conservation and sustainable development, aligning with global frameworks such as the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
In George, the municipality actively implements and supports various biodiversity-focused initiatives, including:
Environmental awareness programs that educate and empower our communities, responsible waste management practices promoting a cleaner, greener environment, ongoing efforts to manage and remove invasive alien plant species and support for regional conservation programs safeguarding our natural heritage.
We also recognise and protect areas within our region rich in biodiversity, such as the Garden Route Botanical Garden, a vital space for ecological health, recreation, education, and long-term sustainability.
