GEORGE NUUS - As winter grips the region with icy winds and driving rain, a group of compassionate locals are joining hands to bring warmth and shelter to the dogs left out in the cold.
A call has gone out for donations to help create simple, effective dog shelters from round 25L or 50L plastic basins - the type available at stores like Pep.
Each shelter requires two basins, providing a snug haven for vulnerable pets braving the elements.
In addition, stormy blankets (also available at Pep) are welcome, as well as donations of dog food or treats in ice cream containers.
All contributions can be dropped off at 7 Smith Street, Bergsig, where the shelters will be assembled and distributed to various animal charities in need.
“No donation is too small,” says organiser Susan Kemp. “Whether it’s a basin, a blanket or a bucket of kibbles - every little bit helps to keep these dogs safe and warm.
"Let’s stand together and help those who can’t help themselves.”
