GEORGE NEWS - Magistrate Clifton Maseti handed down heavy sentences to two men from Thembalethu who were found guilty of housebreaking and robbery with aggravating circumstances.
Asekhona Jonas (29) and Ayabulela Mtongana (27) appeared in the Thembalethu Regional Court on Monday 26 August. On the charge of housebreaking, both the accused were sentenced to five years direct imprisonment. Jonas was handed down a further 15 years for robbery.
He will be serving his sentences concurrently, which means he will effectively spend 15 years behind bars.
Mtongana was also handed down a further 15 years for robbery. He will however be spending 18 years behind bars as it was decided that two of his five-year sentence should run concurrently with the 15-year sentence.
Reinet de Waal was for the state and Bonaice Scheel from Legal Aid SA, represented the accused.
According to Thembalethu police communications officer, Capt Dumile Gwavu, the accused robbed two men of watches, cigarettes and a pair of shoes at a home in Ncamazana Street in Zone 3, Thembalethu, on 22 July 2018. They were arrested shortly afterwards.
Acting station commander, Lieut-Col Mteto Sapepa, applauded the investigative officer, Const Luthando Jantjie, for the sterling work he had done to ensure that the accused remain behind bars.
