GEORGE NEWS - The Phelophepa Health Train, which brings health and hope to thousands of rural South Africans who need access to healthcare facilities, will be at the George Railway Station from Monday 11 September to Friday 15 September.
The train is fitted with numerous clinics including dentistry, optometry, general medical and psychology, in which a host of ailments can be tested and treated.
- Free health care education
- Diabetic screenings and cancer education
- Pap smears and prostate and breast screenings are free, but the medicine is R5 per prescription
- Eye clinic tests are free, but glasses are charged at R30 (this does not include operations or bifocals) and eye drops R5.
- Dental clinic - extractions, fillings and cleanings are charged at R10 per procedure. All procedures for children 15 years and younger are free.
- Counselling and psychology services are available to individuals. These include workshops to help cope with stress, abuse, conflict, death, parenting, discipline, empowerment and working through emotions, and are free.
Memorise the date and arrive early. Remember to bring your clinic card, including immunisation cards for children. Treatment is scheduled on a first-come, first-served basis.
The Phelophepa train of hope was established in 1994, operating as a mobile eye clinic.
The following year the need for wider primary health care was recognised and more comprehensive optometry, dental and psychological care was added. Each of these clinics has dedicated train carriages that have been specifically design to meet the needs of each clinic.
