GEORGE NEWS - The month of November is dedicated to disability rights awareness in South Africa, focusing on the needs and rights of persons with disabilities. Go George, putting a high priority on the bus service’s accessibility and user-friendliness for all passengers, has once again compiled a programme of activities to reach out to the disability sector in the George community.
A series of school visits kicked off at the Carpe Diem School for children with special needs on Friday 8 November.
The Go George communication champions' drama group presented a short play about the travel experience of passengers with disabilities, highlighting the facilities and equipment on the buses as well as at the bus stops. "It is designed to facilitate and enhance their use of the bus service.
The youngsters thoroughly enjoyed the humorous presentation," said Chantel Edwards-Klose, the municipal communications manager.
Mascot Georgie and his cousin Smartie, both from the Go George family, were accompanied by their new friend Able, the Casual Day mascot. Edwards-Klose said they handed out drawstring bags with Dram (Disability Rights Awareness Month) stickers, sun visor caps and Go George activity books, to the delight of the learners who couldn't get enough of the big friendly guys.
The Carpe Diem learners were delighted with their Go George drawstring bags and sun visors.
Trixy Phillips (10) does not skip a single page in her Go George activity book. She spent the entire weekend colouring in and playing the games.
